The athletics arena in the Žaliakalnis district of Kaunas is the latest addition to the expanding Ąžuolynas multifunctional sports and leisure complex. It is already adorned with a fully renovated Sports Street and Square, and plans are underway to create an avenue of fame for athletes in the vicinity.
The total area of the arena building will exceed 15,000 square meters. The new space will feature running tracks, sectors for jumping, and shotput training. Athletes will improve their physical fitness in the gymnasiums and regain their strength in the relaxation zones. The building will also include administrative rooms, meeting spaces, and a café. Additionally, the facility will have an underground parking lot with 140 spaces and accommodate approximately 500 spectators.
For the construction of the arena, Peikko products were selected, including approximately 0.5 kilometers of DELTABEAM® Composite Beams and the installation of 30 composite columns. Engineers from Peikko Lithuania designed the DELTABEAM® Frame for the office building of the arena. DELTABEAM® Composite Beams facilitated the creation of large spaces. These beams, used with perforated plates, allowed for spans of up to 12.8 meters.
DELTABEAM® Composite Beams were also used in the access areas above the underground parking lot, where a thin-floor structure without protruding beams was crucial. Traditional reinforced concrete beams would not have been suitable for this purpose. The project also utilized 11-meter-long composite columns. The office building of the arena is supported by columns on two floors, and the central columns additionally support the 56.5-meter-long roof truss of the arena.
